About Us

Dr. Katherine Alfredo, Research Team PI

india edf

Achieving sustainable, safe water quality at the tap is not trivial and requires a non-traditional approach. The experiences I accumulated prior to joining the faculty ranks at the University of South Florida continue to influence the research I pursue. My career embodies the National Academies definition of the interdisciplinary researcher; I am an environmental engineer who researches behavioral choice, participatory research, regulatory policy, and the physical-chemical-biological treatment processes to help improve the sustainable provisions of potable water both in the U.S. and globally.

I joined the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department in 2019 and quickly began my Drinking Water Treatment, Access, Policy, and Sustainability Research Group. Much of my research is focused on global WAter Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) from the perspective of developing the technology that can adequately treat contaminated water, to the integration of treatment technology into communities, and the policy that can shape treatment interventions. The progress of global WASH, especially drinking water services, is measured by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #6.

I regularly teach the core graduate Aquatic Chemistry and the required sophomore Sustainable and Healthy Communities courses. In addition, I teach elective courses like  Engineering for International Development, integrating SDG awareness into each.

Please see my CV for a full list of teaching, research grants, and fellowships.
